Working a Wedding with a Sprained Ankle

So Thursday I fell & sprained my ankle at a family session in El Paso. Me & the turtle statue at memorial park officially have beef now lol. Lets just say I need to start wearing better shoes during sessions instead of chanclas. Luckily, my clients were nurses, so they had my ankle on ice and wrapped up in a scarf.

Any who, I had a wedding to photograph that Saturday in Santa Fe! I was stressing out thinking my ankle was broken & that I would have to suffer through it. So I called up my friend Abby who lives in Albuquerque to see if she would be able to help me & thank goodness she said yes!

I was able to get a good ankle brace from Walmart & my brother went to the medical store to rent me a knee scooter so I would be able to get around for the wedding. At this point I didn’t have time to go to the Med Clinic & I didn’t want to go to the ER because No lol

So “we” , my husband, packed & loaded the truck and we hit the road to Santa Fe. I kept trying to put weight on my foot so I could at least be mobile in the ceremony portion of the wedding. There was no way I would be able to scoot around in between the pews trying to take photos without getting in trouble.

Surprisingly, once I started snapping photos I felt better & just ended up limping everywhere. Thankfully my husband was there to carry my bag when I needed it. My second shooter was such a great help too! She was able to be on the other side of the church capturing the shots that I couldn’t get to. Then after the wedding she helped me wrangle all the family and the bridal party for portraits.

Walking around in the sand was kind of painful but not too bad. After we got the Bride & Groom’s photos done, there was a break before the reception so back to the hotel to rest & recharge I went.

Ibuprofen was my best friend throughout the whole day. So if your ever in this situation,

1. Go to the doctor lol don’t be stubborn like me. Thankfully it was only a sprain & not really broken.

2. Have a great team helping you, even if its just to carry your bag. It will definitely make all the difference.

3. Wear good shoes because your other foot will be dying by the end of the night.

Once we got home, I went to the Med Clinic & spent about 4 hours there, getting x-rays and waiting. It turned out to just be a sprain & no break was seen on x-rays. It’s still a little sore but I’m doing a lot better.

All in all, I was pretty proud that I was able to still capture such a beautiful wedding for such a lovely couple. I will 1000% be going back to Santa Fe to capture more photos of the scenery & maybe even another wedding up there!
